Oil Addiction Threatens Our National Security David A. Harris Executive Director, American Jewish Committee Week of January 24, 2006 David Harris delivers regular radio commentaries on the CBS radio network, which can be heard nationally just before the Osgood File on more than 400 stations. The following is the full text of this week's broadcast: Here we go again--another nervous oil market. The reason? This time it's fear of a clash between Iran and the West over Iran's drive to build nuclear weapons. The Iranian mullahs think they have us "over a barrel" - of oil, that is. After all, they're earning a fortune from an oil-hungry world. Our nation's dependence on imported oil keeps getting us in trouble. We end up sending petrodollars to nations that aren't necessarily our friends. In 1973, President Nixon said, "By 1980 we will be self-sufficient" in energy. Not quite. In reality, we've only become less self-sufficient. That jeopardizes our national security. We must reduce our dangerous addiction to Middle East oil. It won't be easy or happen overnight, but do we have a choice? We need Republicans and Democrats in Washington to unite around this high-octane issue. And each of us can do the patriotic thing-cut our own energy consumption, starting today. This is David Harris of the American Jewish Committee. |
