The Palestinians and Their Leaders April 21, 2006 To the Editor: Re "The Face of Hamas" (editorial, April 19): Those who believe that Hamas can be bifurcated into political and military wings are naïve, and it is time for all to recognize that such distinctions are a dangerous illusion. Hamas's endorsement of the suicide bombing in Tel Aviv on Monday was yet another costly reminder that even as Hamas now runs the Palestinian government, violence remains a vital tool to achieve its political goals. Israel is committed to completing the peace process with the Palestinians begun on the White House lawn nearly 13 years ago. The burning question is what do the Palestinian people and their leaders really want: two states, Israel and Palestine, living side by side in peace or a radical Islamic state replacing Israel? The world cannot desire a two-state solution to this conflict more than the Palestinians themselves. E. Robert Goodkind President American Jewish Committee New York, April 19, 2006 |
