ADL labeled as "deplorable and offensive" a call by a branch of Canada’s largest labor union for a full range of anti-Israel boycott activity. The Ontario chapter of the Canadian Union of Public Employees unanimously passed a resolution to "support the international campaign of boycott, divestment and sanctions" against Israel. More>>
- Pope Condemns Anti-Semitism
In an address in Rome, Pope Benedict XVI, reflecting on his recent visit to Auschwitz, condemned anti-Semitism and linked it to the mass extermination of six million Jews in the Holocaust. ADL initially expressed concern at the Pope’s failure to explicitly address the vicious anti-Semitism of the Nazis when he stood in Auschwitz. More >>

White Supremacist Matt Hale’s public career as a racist who inspired others to commit hate-driven crimes went out with a whimper, after an appeals court upheld his conviction and 40-year sentence for soliciting the murder of a federal judge. More>>
- Iowa Rep. Should Disavow Anti-Immigrant Remarks
In a speech at an anti-immigrant rally in Las Vegas, U.S. Rep. Steve King, an Iowa Republican, claimed that 25 Americans “die every day” as a result of the actions of illegal aliens, and that this loss of life constitutes a “slow motion Holocaust on our hands.” ADL urged the congressman to repudiate and apologize for his “inappropriate and insensitive” remarks. - Immigration Reform Bill Welcomed
ADL welcomed Senate passage of a comprehensive immigration reform bill. The Senate bill, which passed by a vote of 62-36, combines increased border security with measures such as a path to citizenship for many undocumented immigrants and a guest worker program. More>>
- Same-Sex Marriage Bill Fails in Senate
While pleased that the Senate could not muster enough votes to approve the so-called "Marriage Protection Amendment," the League expressed dismay that the Senate would even attempt to vote on a measure that would discriminate against gay Americans. More>>
- Church of Scotland Targets Products From Israeli Settlements
The Church of Scotland's General Assembly called for European authorities and the World Council of Churches to clearly identify products made in Israel's West Bank settlements. ADL called the practice “discriminatory and counterproductive.” More>>
- Israel Study Initiative Recognized
ADL and its partners were recognized by the Israel on Campus Coalition with the Outstanding Collaborative Project Award for “The Coordinated California Campaign to Reinstate Study Abroad within the University of California System,” an effort to persuade state and university officials to eliminate barriers to study abroad programs in Israel. UC Regents currently do not endorse travel and study in Israel because of the U.S. State Department’s travel advisory, but are expected to approve measures that would make it easier for students to study in Israel.
- Online Course Makes Diversity Count
ADL is enrolling participants for the pilot of its first ever Web-based A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE® Institute anti-bias course. Making Diversity Count: An Online Course for Educators, developed with funding from the Ford Foundation and the Sylvia and Leon P. Nagin Family Foundation, is a groundbreaking educational initiative for secondary level educators in public, private and parochial schools to combat bias and promote respect. School staff and/or individual educators may enroll and take the 12-15 hour online course now through October 27.
- Law Enforcement Receives Advanced Training
The ninth session of ADL’s Advanced Training School course on Extremist and Terrorist Threats was held in Washington, DC. The course provided 35 senior-level law enforcement officials with training, information and resources to help increase their capabilities in combating domestic and international terrorist threats. Participating were major city police chiefs and special agents from the FBI and ATF. More>>
