The head of the World Economic Forum apologized for an outrageous anti-Israel article appearing in the official magazine of the forum’s annual meeting in Davos. The article called for a boycott against the Jewish State and contained outright false statements about Israel, Zionism and Israeli policy. More>>
- Ukraine Condemns Anti-Semitic University
Ukraine’s foreign minister and the Ministry of Education and Science publicly condemned MAUP University’s anti-Semitic activities and called for “anti-incitement laws to be effectively enforced.” ADL has called MAUP, one of the country’s leading institutions of higher education, a hotbed for anti-Semitic incitement. - Jordan Urged to Reconsider Discriminatory Border Policy
The Jordanian government was urged to reconsider its policy of refusing entry to religious Jewish tourists carrying prayer shawls and other religious items. In the latest incident, on January 18, a group of eight Israeli tourists was barred from entering the country after an inspection at the border crossing revealed prayer shawls and phylacteries. - Academic Boycott Subject of Israel Conference
Ben Cohen, ADL Director of European Affairs, addressed a major conference at Bar-Ilan University in Israel examining the campaign to boycott Israeli academic institutions. Mr. Cohen focused on the ideological foundations of the boycott and, in particular, the false claim that Israel is an apartheid state.
- Kentucky: Governor’s Prayer Breakfast Questioned
The League called on Kentucky Gov. Ernie Fletcher to publicly apologize for a prayer breakfast where only Christians had leadership roles in offering public prayers, reading Scripture or sharing testimony. ADL Regional Board Chair Herb Wainer and Regional Director Bettysue Feuer wrote to the governor, saying that it was “insensitive … to have an event sponsored in your name that both promotes and endorses sectarian religious themes and practices.” A spokesman for the governor’s office said other faiths would be included in the future. - Georgia: Ten Commandments Bills “Bad Public Policy”
The Ten Commandments would be displayed in county courthouses and other government buildings under several bills being considered by the Georgia state legislature. ADL called the proposed legislation “unconstitutional and bad public policy” and noted that past U.S. Supreme Court rulings have deemed the Commandments “an endorsement of one religion.” In the News: WXIA-TV, Channel 11 News
- New York: Constitutional Law Briefing
The New York Regional Office held the first in a series of briefings on constitutional law issues, focusing on free speech/First Amendment issues and hate speech laws. Continuing Legal Education credit is being given to attorneys who attend, and the New York staff is working toward accreditation with the state Bar Association.
- Los Angeles: Holocaust Workshop for Educators
ADL’s Pacific Southwest Region is beginning a four-part series on “The Relevance of Teaching the Holocaust in the 21st Century,” as part of the 23rd annual Los Angeles Holocaust Education Workshop. In the run-up to the event, the League hosted educators, A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE® Institute facilitators and others at a screening of the new Hungarian film, “Fateless.” The workshop introduces Echoes and Reflections: A Multimedia Curriculum on the Holocaust, the new curriculum for middle and high school students developed by ADL, Yad Vashem and Shoah Foundation.
- Denver: Anti-Bias Handbook Unveiled
Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper and Denver Schools Superintendent Michael Bennett joined with ADL in unveiling “Positive Impact! Tools for Respecting Differences.” The free, bilingual booklet was developed by the League’s Mountain States Regional Office to help students, educators and community leaders understand and embrace diversity. The booklet has guidelines for challenging racism and an exercise on “How Can I Create a Just Society.” More>>
- Las Vegas: Middle School Students Challenge Bias
Members of the Von Tobel Middle School Multicultural Club the Clark County school system are using ADL’s “No Place for Hate” program to encourage teachers and peers to combat hate and prejudice in their school and community. The students meet weekly to create anti-bias slogans, plan diversity dances and develop video topics.
- Philadelphia: Hate Literature Prompts Concern, Action
ADL’s Philadelphia Office has promptly responded to the distribution of hateful anti-Semitic literature in Northeast Philadelphia and many nearby areas. For more than a year, fliers from the virulently anti-Semitic and racist National Alliance and other hate groups have appeared on driveways and lawns, prompting concern in the community. More>>
