AJC Condemns Palestinian Terror Attack in Tel Aviv

April 17, 2006 - New York - The American Jewish Committee strongly condemns today's Palestinian terrorist bombing in Tel Aviv, which left at least seven dead and several dozen wounded.

“While the Iranian-backed Islamic Jihad has claimed responsibility for today's terror attack, the Hamas-led Palestinian government bears the ultimate responsibility,” said AJC Executive Director David A. Harris. “The political ascendancy of Hamas, which denies Israel's very right to exist, fosters today's culture of hate and violence that encourages terrorism, including firing rockets from Gaza into Israel and murderous suicide bombings.”

Indeed, Hamas Cabinet ministers claimed that the suicide bombing was an “act of self-defense,” a term Harris called “patently absurd.”

“The path to a negotiated Israeli-Palestinian peace is clear, and terrorism is not the vehicle to achieve that goal,” said Harris. “Only when the Palestinian people and their leaders recognize Israel, renounce terror, and pursue a genuinely peaceful settlement of the conflict can we look forward to a promising era in the region.”
