Energy Crisis Threatens Us David A. Harris Executive Director, American Jewish Committee Week of May 15, 2006 In 1974, President Nixon declared that by 1980 we would "not be dependent on any other country for the energy we need." Just about every president since Nixon has repeated the worthy goal. But there's a problem. Today, our country is more dependent than ever on imported energy, much from nations that aren't our friends. What went wrong? There's lots of blame to go around. Too many elected officials haven't had the courage and vision to do what needs to be done. Instead, there's lots of politics as usual and blame the other side. Too many Americans believe it's our right to use energy to our heart's content, whether at home or on the road, without thinking about the consequences. But there are big-time consequences. Our national security, the environment, and our future competitiveness as a nation all hang in the balance. America, we need the same can-do spirit for energy independence that took us to the moon. And our elected officials need to hear from us, loud and clear. Visit us at http://www.ajc.org . |
