As the 60th session of the United Nations General Assembly convened with an eye toward institutional reform, ADL engaged in a series of meetings with heads of state and foreign ministers in an effort to ensure that the reforms include “a fundamental sea-change” in the U.N.’s treatment of Israel. - Polish President Honored As ‘Distinguished Statesman’
In an address to top ADL and Jewish community leaders, President Aleksander Kwasniewski of Poland reaffirmed his country’s commitment to combating the twin scourges of anti-Semitism and xenophobia both at home and as a leader on the world stage. President Kwasniewski was presented with the League’s Distinguished Statesman Award for his commitment to furthering the achievement of regional and world peace. More>>

- Southern Baptists Urged to Stop Conversion Efforts
ADL condemned as “insulting, disgraceful and dangerous” plans by leaders of the Southern Baptist Convention - the nation’s largest Protestant group - to consider forming a partnership with a Messianic Jewish group in order to missionize Jews in the U.S. and around the world. More>>
- Student Prayer Sessions Must Not Violate Constitution
Concerned about potential church-state violations, ADL sent a letter to school districts across the country expressing concerns that “See You At The Poll,” a national, student-initiated prayer program held September 21, could lead to violations of separation of church and state. Although the League does not regard the function as unconstitutional, it provided school districts with guidelines explaining that administrators and teachers cannot officially endorse or participate in the event.
- Landmark Terrorism Judgment Must Be Upheld
ADL submitted a friend-of-the-court brief in support of the landmark judgment against four Islamic charities and a fundraiser for the Palestinian militant group Hamas for complicity in the murder of a 17-year old American citizen in Israel, David Boim. More>>
- House Votes To Expand Federal Hate Crimes Laws
The U.S. House of Representatives voted in support of legislation to expand federal hate crimes laws. The measure, the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crime Prevention Act, was approved, 223-199, as an amendment to the Children's Safety Act of 2005. More>>
- N.M. Law Enforcement Briefed on Vigilante Groups
Federal, state and local New Mexico law enforcement attended an ADL training on vigilante border groups in Albuquerque. Attendees learned about the influence of white supremacist groups on border issues, their tactics and strategies as well as anticipated counter-protests. New Mexico is expecting a major influx of Minutemen border patrols in October.
